Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can occur when individuals are exposed to overwhelming stress due to life threatening situations, extreme life events and abuse. The mind may react in a variety of ways: shock, detachment, fear, constantly re-seeing events, avoidance and withdrawal of people or situations, and a range of other responses.
Anxiety disorders can manifest in a wide variety of symptoms. Persistent worry, dread, compulsions and obsessions, anxiety in social situations, panic attacks and phobias to name a few. Anxiety is often a prediction of a fear of something we do not want to happen. Sometimes our brains apply distorted thinking, which may cause an overreaction of the fear response.
It's useful to talk about a spectrum of depressive disorders ranging from mild to major. Depression is not a passing low mood. It is a persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness and worthlessness with decreased desire and motivation to engage in life and formerly pleasurable activities. Major depressive disorder can negatively affect a person's personal, social and work life. It also may negatively affect sleep, eating habits and general health.
Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death of a loved one. The loss of a loved one provokes a mix of emotional responses after an initial feeling of numbness. Grief is an important part of coping and has both psychological and physical effects. Grief is a natural response to many situations of significant loss.
Communication is far more complex than it appears. There is considerable scope for misunderstandings to arise. We may think we have been clear but the message may have become obscured in the dialogue. Learning communication techniques and strategies will minimise misunderstanding.
Stress occurs when your sense of the demands placed on you exceed or are incongruent with what you understand are your own abilities and capacities. A critical aspect of stress events is the way we think about the situation which has the potential for stress to feed on itself and to become more severe.
Clients do not need a referral from their GP or psychiatrist to make an appointment. You may call the practice directly. If you have private health insurance and are covered for psychology you may be able to claim a rebate by calling your private health insurer.
An appointment can be made with you GP to discuss your needs and if you are eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan. You may then be able to access a rebate through Medicare.
There are times when your doctor or psychiatrist and the practice work in concert to provide optimum outcomes on your behalf.
